An Androgynous Mind

"We're trained to see only male or female and to plot people into those categories when they actually don't fit neatly at all. But if we pause, watch and listen closely we'll see the multiplicity of ways in which people are sexed and gendered. There exists a range of personal identifications around woman, man, in-between--we don't even have names or pronouns that reflect that in between place but people certainly live in it" (Pratt). Anyone can see the differences between men and women whether it’s physically, emotionally, socially, scientifically, or psychiatrically. In Daniel Pink's bussiness book A Whole New Mind Why Right Brainers Will Rule The Future it discusses what sense need to be adapted to be succesful in teh conceptual age, androgyny fits into every single one of the sense. Most people view a single spectrum on which men and women are naturally placed and where they are labeled. When in reality, men and women are on two completely diverse spectrums; the lines that androgynous minded people cross are both thick and distinct. They cross into the grey area, between the black and the white. They represent a whole of society that is separated into two different classifications; they view everything as a whole instead of just a meager slice that leaves much information and insight out of life. They have a whole new mind. The androgyny their mind creates and depicts has been viewed in society as abnormal and as a disadvantage, homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, drag queens, and transsexuals acquire the minds society unfortunately lacks. They challenge their minds to see both the similarities and the differences between the spectrums. In order to be successful in the conceptual age, it is critical that ones mind has the heightened sense of androgyny in all aspects of thinking.

The physical differences between men and women are obvious, but what is less obvious is the differences in the mind and its way of thinking. To fully understand what it is to obtain an androgynous mind, one must fully comprehend the traits of a man’s mind compared with the women’s mind. At the beginning and crucial stages of development of a human, the way your parents raise a baby can make all the difference in the world. When girl babies are raised, they tend to be looked at directly while being talked to, they also witness a wider variety of facial expresses than boy babies do. Female babies generally get caressed more and not as bounced around as boys are. When adults are communicating with girls they talk softer and gentler then when they talk to boys. All of these are why girls generally grow up smiling more and are more open to expressing their emotions (Relationship Institute ). In A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink mentions that the majority of women cradle their babies on their left side because we depend on facial expressions to understand babies’ needs, and since empathy is a right-brained activity we turn it on by turning to the left side (Pink). This shows that women’s minds work differently by basic instinct, not by anyone’s choice or chosen purpose. Also, when boys grow up their main interests are generally sex and some sort of competitive lifestyle. On average, boys think about sex every 59 seconds where as girls think about sex an average of once a day. Growing up from ages 12-18, girls’ main interests are getting a boyfriend, and boys' is sex, cars, and sports (Relationship Institute). The milestones not only don’t match but collide in a way that is almost impossible to coexist together. Boys and girls have different milestones and ultimately what the different gender wants to do or achieve is stopped or interrupted by the opposing gender. A girl commonly wants a working relationship that incorporates communication and more emotional involvement from both parties. A common boy growing up is more interested in the physical relationship. This situation is almost impossible to compromise or change because of basic instinct which is controlled by hormones. In the music video "Like a Boy" by Ciara, the thought of changing gender roles expresses how much of an affect such an act would have on relationships. Daniel Pink mentions how putting oneself in another’s shoes is important in empathy, and this gets increasingly difficult when one considers how hard it is to relate to the opposite sex. It is hard for a woman to empathize with a man because a woman cannot think like a man. The minds of a man and a woman are hard to compare because they shouldn’t even be classed together. It’s like comparing a dog with a cat, two distinct species that only have basic molecular characteristics in common. Another difference that extends beyond the physical appearance is the way men and women deal with emotions. Men have a much more difficult time relating to their own feelings, and may feel threatened by the expression of feelings in their presence. This may cause them to react by withdrawing or attempting to manipulate the situation through a display of control or power. Men are actually more vulnerable and dependent on relationships than women are, and are more devastated by the ending, since they have fewer friends and sources of emotional support. Men are more at ease with their own angry feelings than women are. Women are in touch with a much wider range of feelings than men, and the strength of those feelings is usually much greater (Relationship Institute ). As a result, many men perceive that women's feelings appear to change quickly; men may find this irritating and difficult to understand. A lot of conflicts may arise from all these differences that can possibly clash and collide. Most women complain that men don’t listen, and men complain that most women try and change them. When a woman tries to modify, develop, correct or give advice to a man, what men hear is that they aren't capable, don't know how to do something, or that they can't do something on their own. Two species are struggling to coexist with one another, and while it’s true that on some occasions opposites attract, other times, they just constantly but heads. As obvious as the physical differences are, the differences between men and women in the mind, can vary within categories and simple subjects. Whether it’s the way they think or the way they were brought up, it has a colossal impact on daily life and on the success of the individual. Men and women have equal rights and protections under the law, but they are not equal because they are rarely similar.

"Bisexuality is a blessing and a curse, but viewing it as schizophrenia will make you insane.... I am not a whole person with split desires: I am a whole person with desire. As everyone is, regardless" (Powers). One may not consider what it means to have an androgynous mind. At first, it sounds scary, as though you must be scientifically a man and a woman. Its one thing to be physically androgynous but it’s completely realistic to dream to obtain an androgynous mind. It is thinking like a man and a woman, it’s living in two different worlds, and it’s owning a holistic mind. If you are high in masculine traits you are not automatically low in feminine traits and vice versa. An androgynous person would be high in both masculine and feminine traits; they can be assertive or submissive, forceful or gentle, emotional or passive. It varies with the situation or for the task at hand. Creative and artistic people, who are very expressive, tend to be androgynous; they are also highly adaptive and independent (Gershaw). Pink discusses the characteristics of androgynous girls to be more aggressive, physical, and sociable which all contradict feminine traits. He also recognizes that androgynous males are more creative, artistic, sensitive, and introverted (136 ). So it’s possible to detect a boy and a girl, but to detect an androgynous person you must personally search their mind and their thinking. In certain situations it would be easier to detect a truly androgynous person. A truly androgynous person can modify their responses and reactions, according to their needs or the needs of the atmosphere and situation (Gershaw). The labels our society insists on giving people can pinpoint them as homosexuals, bisexuals, drag queens, transvestites, etc. they are commonly regarded as outcasts, when really they obtain what most people in the conceptual world lack . . . an androgynous mind. They don’t let things such as gender and stereotypical roles assign them to only half the brain they rightfully own. They feed off of two separate continuums and they bring twice as much to the table as un-androgynous people. Not to say that ones sexuality will benefit their mind but the privilege of having an open mind that is not trapped in only a portion of the full equation. Gay male adolescents averagely report becoming aware of feelings of distinct differences at the ages 5-7, at this age they did not make the connection between these feelings and sexuality. Averagely they make the connection of indifference and sexuality at age 13. 97 percent of students in public schools report regularly hearing homophobic slurs; 80 percent of gay students report social isolation (Sears). Being aware of a difference in oneself would benefit their way of thinking. This is because less mind blocks would occur and an open mind would allow knowledge to flow free in the mind and for the host to apply it freely. Negativity towards ones own mind could block and choke the thought process like smoke in a fire, starting with a spark ending in destruction. Pink argues that taking happiness seriously can improve ones sense of meaning, to truly be happy one needs a loving, caring, long term relationship with oneself. Jack Mcfarllen is a character in the popular sitcom series Will and Grace and is openly gay. He doesn't try and change the mind he was given and embraces who he is and in doing so lives a fullfilled and happy life. The following video shows him dancing simply because he chooses to, and enjoying life with the mind he has. Everyone that is truly androgynous and truly happy is bisexual. They must love themselves (the same sex) to be truly happy and to accept ideas, one must accept themselves. Accordingly to have an androgynous mind means seeing life from two views. It’s breaking barriers and not letting labels constrict ones mind. Owning an androgynous mind is seeing things as a whole without leaving out any potential mind capacity.

“Androgyny is not trying to manage the relationship between the opposites; it’s simply learning to flow between them”. June Singer expresses the importance of not only housing an androgynous mind but living with it and using its benefits to enhance one’s life. Many icons, such as June Singer have done just this and have reaped the benefits and have become very successful. For example Michael Jackson broke molds and aided in inventing a culture due to his androgyny (Peterson). Models also must be androgynous and open to a multitude of mold breaking tasks. In a photoshoot for Americas Next Top Model, aspiring models must pose as men and they must pose with drag queens and pull off a convincing couple look. Musicians, designers, and other artists must appeal to both men and women, it must work for both sexes and it must appeal to both masculine and feminine desires. Pink describes design as utility enhanced by significance; he says that humans are naturally seeking novelty and beauty. But as described earlier, men and women own different minds that could possibly host various tastes in novelty. To be valued as a high quality designer one must consider both genders. What is significant to a man is not necessarily significant to a woman, so a good designer is ultimately a compromiser. It’s the whole picture as opposed to sketches without details. Singer “Little Richard” was viewed as an outrageous character of his time with his feminine look and voice that has undeniable music appeal to the masses. He became increasingly successful because audiences and society accepted his androgyny with his quality music and talent. He was considered in relation to himself, society did not look at his image separate from his talent. He was accepted as a package deal and culture got a healthy dousing of someone who as a separate was androgynous, but as a whole was a successful androgynous musician (Peterson) Pink states, “Symphony, as I call this aptitude, is the ability to put together the pieces. It is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields . . . and to invent something new by combining elements nobody else thought to pair.” (Pink 130). Symphony in relation to the benefits of an androgynous mind is the ability to not only have masculine and feminine traits and thoughts, but to be able to compare and contrast the two. It’s seeing the relationships that men and women incorporate and thinking not only like a man and a woman, but by looking at things as a whole. The idea of empathy, which was mentioned earlier, is the sense of feeling with someone, putting oneself in someone else’s shoes. Most would consider this to be a unisex aptitude but most have not remembered that men and women wear different styles of shoes. Men and women have different places to walk to, different ways of walking, different views on how to nurture and aid their feet, so wouldn’t it be logical to assume putting oneself in someone else’s shoes especially those of another gender would be difficult? This video from the television show Boy Meets World shows a teenage boy's idea to live literally as a girl. It is also logical to say that women are more empathetic than men. “The female brain is predominantly hard-wired for empathy. The male brain is hard wired for understanding and building systems.” (Pink 172). Empathy enables you to think logically and clearly unlike the person you are empathizing with. Emotional states lessen the ability to consider things critically and clearly (Syque). Intimate friendships require a lot of empathetic support from both parties and therefore empathy is critical for functional and healthy relationships among humans. Men and women can coexist to build relationships together and empathy can only widen the door to such a unique relationship between opposite people. To thrive in society it is crucial to feel with others, including the opposite sex so a mind that is androgynous would own this ability to the highest regards. They would feel and understand someone in a systematic way unique to the soloing empathy in only one gender. Women may dominate in regards to empathy but when it comes to play and gaming men are the majority. They play more games more often, especially video games. But games that both men and women take equal share in are mind games. For men and women the mind games generally vary on gender. Mind games that men commonly complain about women playing is the wait game, they make men wait just to watch men “squirm” they enjoy beginning with the control and want to test to see how far men will go. The crazier a man gets, the more he must like her, they’re testing to see how far one can push another. Girls also play dumb to get someone else to get their work done or to play a role of a dependant girl that is easily outsmarted. Both games are forms of another game women tend to play, fishing for compliments. Trying to get a rise or start an emotional war is strategy for women because they reveal their emotions often and openly. Men play games also, they lie to get what they want and use people, especially girls as mere hosts to their games. Men that play emotional games are termed as players, but ultimately both genders play games in life, trying to win an end goal or prize (Rase). Androgynous people acquire both masculine and feminine minds and desire and therefore, all the games played by men and women. They could possibly wage wars on themselves, attacking the other gender inhabiting the brain, without being conscience of it. It’s comparable to the devil/angel image of our conscience; expect it’s a man and a woman playing games to fight for dominance in the mind. Pink explains how playing games holds much importance because it is the ultimate learning machine, its learning through exploration and experience. In connection to mind games it’s exploring and experiencing ones mind as androgynous and contradicting games allow one to learns more about the differences and similarities. One can learn about a unique mind only by putting it to use without purposely doing so, and playing games is just the way to experience ones own mind. The benefits of owning an androgynous mind are endless, if one is lucky enough to have such a privilege, one should milk it for all it is worth. Men and women were selected to exist in two separate worlds and as a result get to thrive in the Conceptual Age.

In order to be successful in the Conceptual Age, it is critical that one's mind has the heightened sense of androgyny in all aspects of thinking. It’s important for one to understand the differences between men and women and to comprehend what an androgynous mind has to offer and how to seek benefits from such a disguised blessing. Men and women are often referred to on the same spectrum, but in reality they exist on separate conundrums. It’s a thick line that people commonly cross and society has labeled the action of boundary crossing with terms such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, drag queen, transvestite, etc. Androgynous minds are challenged with opposing thoughts and processes that see the whole world instead of just masculinity or femininity. Men and women differ in so many ways that it's hard to wrap one's brain around the idea of using both systems and thoughts. One can easily misinterpret the idea of having essentially a bisexual mind, it is a scary mind style change to open up so many options, but if one embraces androgyny they will gain a whole new world and a whole new mind. One may view such an outrageous way of thinking as scary unless they learn to think otherwise and experience life in the grey area between the gender spectrums.
